We’ve been publishing content for over a decade – and among my favourite features is our esteemed “Sitting Down With” interview series, which looks at the careers and achievements of outstanding individuals. Over the years, we’ve had the opportunity to speak to some incredible names and learn some amazing stories. For example, Biocon’s Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw told me about the difficulties she experienced in being taken seriously as a woman when she first sought to pursue a career in the brewing industry:

“People believed that a woman would find it difficult to deal with male employees and trade unions – a lame excuse, especially as even then I was being consulted for advice on operational issues by leading breweries!”

And Carl June told us how he never expected CAR Ts to become so successful:

“Back in the 1990s, there were only about five labs working on CAR T cells. There was no pharmaceutical industry involvement back then, and for the academics (including my own lab) that were working on the topic, it was more of an academic thought experiment: Could you redirect a T cell and use it to treat cancer? We weren’t necessarily thinking it would or could ever be commercialized, but it worked.”

We’ve been publishing these interviews online as well as in our print editions. Here, we compile a selection of these inspiring conversations into an eBook. Hear from:

  • Carl June

  • Peter Marks

  • Kiran-Mazumdar-Shaw:

  • Moncef Slaoui

  • Anne Marie de Jonge-Schuermans

  • Bruno Sepodes

  • Karen Costello,

  • Luigi Naldini

  • Claus Zieler

About the Author(s)

Stephanie Vine

Making great scientific magazines isn’t just about delivering knowledge and high quality content; it’s also about packaging these in the right words to ensure that someone is truly inspired by a topic. My passion is ensuring that our authors’ expertise is presented as a seamless and enjoyable reading experience, whether in print, in digital or on social media. I’ve spent fourteen years writing and editing features for scientific and manufacturing publications, and in making this content engaging and accessible without sacrificing its scientific integrity. There is nothing better than a magazine with great content that feels great to read.
