The Medicine Maker / Power List / 2019 / Masters of the Bench / Michele De Luca

Michele De Luca

Director, Centre for Regenerative Medicine “Stefano Ferrari”, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia

  • Profile

Meet Michele De Luca

Michele has been involved in stem cell biology for regenerative medicines for over 30 years and is recognised as leading scientist in human squamous epithelial stem cell-mediated cell and gene therapy.  Following on early work on the use of human epithelial stem cells for life-saving treatment of massive full-thickness burns, his pioneering work has been focused on ex-vivo epithelial stem cell-mediated gene therapy for genetic skin diseases. He has recently reported life-saving regeneration of the entire, fully functional, epidermis on a 7-year-old child suffering from a devastating, life-threatening form of Epidemolysis Bullosa (Nature, 2017).
